Family law business valuation in Brisbane

Family Law Valuations provides business valuations for separating couples and family lawyers in Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast and regional Queensland. The practice is based in Sydney and has no premises in Queensland: engagements are run remotely, from the business records and conversations with the owner. The fees are the same in every state and territory: a Settlement Valuation is $2,495 + GST and a Family Law Expert Valuation is $4,495 + GST, both fixed and confirmed in writing before work starts.

How a Brisbane engagement runs

Remotely: a conflict check, a written scope and fixed fee, a document checklist, the analysis, a draft for factual review, then the final report. Nothing in that sequence needs the valuer and the owner in the same room.

One practical point is the clock. Queensland does not observe daylight saving, so Brisbane keeps the same time as Sydney in winter and runs one hour behind it from early October to early April. The published phone hours, 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday (Sydney time), are 7am to 5pm in Brisbane during those months.

Which court hears a Brisbane family law matter

Family law property matters in Queensland are heard by the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia, which sits in Brisbane and in regional Queensland locations. The Family Law Act 1975 is Commonwealth legislation, so the framework is the same in Queensland as in New South Wales.

A Settlement Valuation is prepared for negotiation and mediation. A Family Law Expert Valuation is prepared for proceedings. If you are not sure which your matter needs, the report finder gives an indicative starting point and your lawyer will confirm it.

Regional and owner-operated businesses

Owner-operated businesses, such as trades, professional practices, hospitality venues and franchises, raise one question above the others: how much of the earnings would continue without the owner. A valuer tests that from the records and from how the business finds and delivers its work, which is why the analysis can be done from anywhere. Goodwill and owner dependence explains how a valuer approaches it.

Do you have an office in Brisbane?

No. Family Law Valuations has one address, in Double Bay, Sydney. Brisbane and regional Queensland engagements are run remotely by phone and document exchange.

How much does a family law business valuation cost in Brisbane?

$2,495 + GST for a Settlement Valuation and $4,495 + GST for a Family Law Expert Valuation, both fixed, the same as in every other state. See fees and inclusions.

Do you value businesses on the Gold Coast and in regional Queensland?

Yes. Because the engagement is run from the records, the location of the business within Queensland does not change the process, the fee or the timing.

Would the valuer have to travel to Brisbane for court?

Only if the valuer is required to give evidence, which applies to a Family Law Expert Valuation and not to a Settlement Valuation. Attendance is not part of either fixed fee. Remote attendance is $650 + GST per hour, four-hour minimum. Attendance in person in Brisbane is $6,500 + GST per day, plus travel and accommodation at cost. Whether the expert attends remotely or in person is decided by the Court, not by the valuer or the parties alone.
